Most of the consultant design the air conditioning cooling capacity based on how big is that area and multiply by the selected cooling capacity per ft^2. However, for some of the room (i.e UPS room, medical waste room, computer server room, lifts motor room and etc), the following items shall be considered:
- The heat dispersion from the equipments especially those server and UPS units which generate a lot of heat shall be considered. The heat load data shall be requested from the relevant supplier for the sizing of the air conditioner cooling capacity.
- The purpose of that air conditioned room. The temperature that required to be maintained (example, UPS room need to be maintained around 20~23?C
- The heat load from the sun should be considered. From those area window, facing the sun rise/sun set direction or external building, bigger cooling capacity shall be provided
One of the projects facing this type of problem, as the heat dispersion from the equipments is not available, therefore no choice to design the air conditioning cooling capacity based on the floor area and recommend cooling rate during the design stage. It ends up the cooling capacity not enough to cater or cool down the temperature of that room due to the equipment generate a lot of heats. Hope that my dear reader can learn from my past experience; try to obtain the heat load of the equipment for the room or ask the client what type of equipments that they going to located at that particular room. The request for information shall be put in writing or black & white, if any insufficient cooling capacity in future due to the information of heat loads unavailable or not able to be provided by the client during design stage, at least got the black & white to protect yourself.
