Business or Engineering?

A lot of people might thought that engineer is a very high paid professional job. However, as a consultant engineer I understand that this so called professional a lot of time is not professional at all, or more correct way to say is the situation not allows you to act professionally. Why say so? Because Business Come FIRST! Business view is different from engineering view. Most of the time business view will win the engineering view, as we as a consultant engineer still control by those businessmen who hire us to design.

They want cut cost then you have to follow what they want even thought in term of engineering is not recommended to do so, you know that if the capacity of certain thing is reduced to save cost it will create headache problem in future, but what can you do if the client insist want to do so? Nothing much we can do beside follow what they want. However, as a consultant engineer, you have to advice them is not recommended to do so in WRITING. This is very important, you must advice in writing. Why? If nothing happen then everything is ok, but if any problem occur due to that, I 100% sure that your client will blame on you as a consultant engineer, even though is them who want to cut cost. Your client might forget they requested it or even if they remember they still will blame on you as a professional why didn’t advice at the first place. If you have advice in black & white at first stage, it at least can protect your own self.

So don’t look so high on your position as a engineer and don’t ego, in fact you still below or under business. Definition of engineer is use minimum input and get maximum output. So, business first then just engineer. If don’t have business then not required to have engineer at all.
