Tips to Reduce Your Air Conditioner Electricity Bill

The relation between the electricity bill and the use of an air conditioner is very easily noticeable. Below are some tips to help save you money.

1. Insulation

Insulation is one technique which can really help you in reducing your electricity bill. When your house is proper insulated, it reduce the air conditioner cooling load. It is a very efficient way of maintaining a cool temperature inside the house and saving money on electricity.

2. Power rating

Usually, a central air conditioner would use 5KwH if it is turned on for a full hour. Your bill will depend on the power of the air conditioner and the duration of time for which it is switched on. When you are buying an air conditioner check the power output and search for one that uses the least amount of power overall but is still effective for the size of your house or room.

3. Programmable Thermostat

Another way of economizing the use of electricity is having a programmable thermostat in the air conditioner so that you can set a higher temperature when you are not at home which would save energy and reduce your overall bill. For example:

occupied: 68F (20c)
sleeping: 63F (17C)
unoccupied: 63F (17C)

In case you already don’t have a programmable thermostat you should purchase one. A PEAKsaver thermostat is a good option for your air conditioner.

4. Close all the windows in your house

Doing this can decrease your air conditioner bill greatly as it keeps the air inside the house rather than letting it escape. Keep all windows closed and if you are heating/cooling only one room then close the door to that room.

There are a great many variables which might affect your air conditioner usage of electricity each month. On an average, electricity bills can be expected to triple for some households during summer/winter months because of the extra usage of the air conditioners. So while running your AC will most certainly increase your electricity bill, there are plenty of ways that you can minimize that increase through smart use of your unit.
